I came home from work today, and Tiffany suggested that I take Noah outside to play.  So, I did.  We had a great time.  He really wanted to throw the frisbee.  It is unbelievable how far that dude can throw a frisbee.

He is a champion!  It made me think of the times when my dad and I would throw frisbee or play catch or wiffle ball, or whatever it was.  But, I loved it.  Both then, and now.

My little son is old enough to throw a frisbee back at me!  HOW CRAZY IS THAT?  I AM ANCIENT.  You should put me in a museum.  I am feeling old right now.

To top it off, we were looking at book bags online for him as he is going to be headed off to the big scary world of preschool this year!  I could be buying my son a book bag, like to actually use!  What planet am I on, and what happened to me being young?

Do you feel old?  When do you think you will feel old?  What is old?

  1. Since you wrote this on my 44th birthday, I felt I just HAD to respond lol! In thinking about it this morning here are the questions that went through my head. Do I feel old because…

…my daughter is in college and it seems like she was just born last week?
…my son is a junior in high school and driving (he’s my baby!!)?
…the first group of junior high students I worked with are now in their mid-30’s with families of their own (one of them with 5 kids!!)?
…physically there are more aches and pains than there used to be?
    …and many, many more!

My conclusion is that I don’t feel old at all. Really! I think about my 91 year old grandmother still painting pictures, planting her garden, doing the polka, writing me letters, talking on the phone and living independently with everyday filled with laughter (and she’s the younger of my grandmothers). She doesn’t seem old to me (nor does she think she’s old) and I’m not even 1/2 her age.

The number of my birthdays, the progression of time and the realities of aging genuinely aren’t bothering me. I’m loving living life and the experiences of each day, each new chapter. Embracing each milestone and being excited about what is yet to come (even though it may be difficult at times as it has been before) are all reasons for celebration for me. Choosing life to me means not spending time thinking about the loss of my “youth,” but instead enthusiastically delighting and cherishing each moment whether I’m 17, 22, 35, 44, 51, 65 or 91 and doing the polka!

    Me? Feeling Old? Nope!

  2. This is funny because I was just having this conversation with some friends last night. They are 23 and as you know I myself am 22. They kept saying that they felt old and didn’t want to get old. To which I would respond “I can’t wait to get older” getting older doesn’t mean you have to be old. If that doesn’t make sense then yes you are old. Besides you are 25 that’s pretty young. Just think when Noah is 20 you will be what 41-42? Come on seriously? Also keep in mind you are only about 3 years older than me.

  3. Hey man – hopefully we can connect this weekend. Give me a shout on email and I can give you my cellie. I have a pretty packed weekend with a parent orientation meeting the first service of Saturday and Sunday. The our Student stuff runs on the second services. But… let’s try and connect!

  4. Wait until you are old enough that your kids’ youth pastor could be your son….

  5. I am scared of being old. I think if people dont understand me now, how little will they understand me when I am old. I am however not afraid of the stage of being old, it is what it will become.

  6. A dear friend of mine keeps on saying…”Getting old isn’t for sissies!” And you know what, she’s right. It takes a brave person to keep running the race and looking to the future… wow … our future is fantastic – heaven. But until then, this same lady has had three different bouts of cancer… leukemia, breast, leukemia and then a back fusion. Getting old isn’t for sissies!
