Today I spent time with another lady other than my wife.  I’m telling you it was great.  Here’s the crazy part, it was even endorsed by my wife.  A lunch date with another woman.  Okay, truth be told, it was a little woman, none other than Grace Madison Gowesky.  We were having a daddy, daughter date.

Before heading out on our date I had tweeted this, “Taking Grace on a lunch date. Its gonna be all fairies, princesses and ponies.”  It wasn’t far from all that.  We had a great time together.  I asked her questions and then just listened.  I spent time listening to the one in our house who probably uses the most words but gets listened to the least, being the youngest.  It was fun to hear some of the things she said.

I asked her what made her happy… Man that response was awesome.  “Being on a date with Daddy.”  After wiping away the tear, I quickly responded with, “any other guy that wants to take you on a date has to go through me!  You got it?”  She said her favorite princess is Tiana.  Why you may say?  “Because she wears a green dress, and it’s my favorite.”  I asked her what she likes to do, “Color, dress up, pretend”  The conversation flowed much like that.

We sat and enjoyed time together.   It was quick, too quick, yet it was really good.  I sat and listened.  I became a student of my daughter.  I wanted to see what it was that made her tick at this point in time in her life.  It all could change by tomorrow and that’s okay.  Tomorrow her favorite princess could be Sleeping Beauty, she could hate coloring and love playdough.  Then tomorrow I’ll need to become a student all over again.  I learned a lot.  Plus we had a great time for enjoying lunch for $4.01.  (Bj’s hot dogs!)

For a brief moment in time I understand Grace, and she understands one thing for sure; I’m her daddy and I love her and think that she is beautiful and amazing just the way she is.

So here’s the question… Who in your life do you need to become a student of?  What questions should you be asking, and who should you be listening to?

A little bit ago I blogged about Noah’s first day of school, and how grown up that little man is getting.  Yesterday Tiffany caught some really funny stuff on video.  Here is the background story:  Noah has a great teacher in school, as evidenced by this video.  He is learning a ton of things.  He loves music, he loves gym, he loves creative times, and all of the other activities that happen at school.  He came home from school yesterday and wanted to “Teach” his little sister Grace all of the things that he has learned.  Make sure and pay attention to Grace throughout the movie too.  She is just as funny if not funnier!

Man they are going to love me when they get older!  This stuff is priceless!

This week has been a fun adventure with the kids!  Tiffany started a new job and I had the opportunity to spend more one on two time with Noah and Grace this week!  We had a blast.  Tuesday night we went chick-fil-a and had a great time.  Noah fell asleep in the car on the way there, but when we got there, he wanted to go down “that” (the slide).  We romped around in the play area for ever!  Then the next night we stepped up our game and went and played at Chucke Cheese’s.  They loved every second of it!

We had a great time laughing and being silly.

Two years ago today I became a father of two children!  This is an exciting moment in our household…  No more need for whole milk, no more baby food, potty training begins soon, no more babies in our house…  (At least for now…)  This is a huge moment in our lives.  We have two children over the age of two.  It is cause for celebration.  We all went into Grace’s room this morning and woke her up… Here’s a little movie I took of that.  It is too funny.

It is thrilling to see Grace grow and become a little girl.  Soon enough it will be exciting to talk about how she is learning to drive, and engaged, and eventually she will be introducing a new life into the world of her own.  I can’t wait to watch and see how she grows.

Imagine with me for a few seconds that if I feel this way about my own son or daughter, how much more excited God gets when we make strides to growing up spiritually!  Imagine when we get to the point where we just aren’t praying for a “good day”.  Or we are beginning to see the needs of others.  I can just see God up in heaven going, “WAHOOOO!!!  I THOUGHT THIS DAY WOULD NEVER COME!  GOWESKY FINALLY GETS IT!  HE IS GROWING!”

What are you doing to intentionally grow closer to God and in your walk with Him?

So life has gotten better.  You could say that life has been restored.  We are not slaves to the washing machine and the drier anymore…  There was a point in time where the word Diarrhea was an integral part of every sentence that flowed from my mouth.  So, this is about what life looked like for the last week and a half or so…

Honestly, this was just about the best way to describe it.  Plenty of caffeine needed.  This morning I am happy to tell you that Grace is doing well.  She is up and about as usual.

Thank you for your prayer support and all of your calls and emails and such!  We appreciate it!  I’ll throw up a cute picture of grace that way the last one in your memory isn’t that sad picture…

Stomachs thankfully settled,

~Peter

Today is the 4th day that Grace (my daughter) has been sick.  She caught the stomach virus that is going around…  Last night Tiffany had to bring her to the hospital because she was severely dehydrated.  They gave her 600 cc’s of fluids.  Unfortunately we called the doctor today, and they want her to go back to the hospital.  Please pray for Grace to get better!  It is hard to watch her sit there in pain.

And it doesn’t help that yesterday I got whatever she has… So…  EHH!!!  You can pray for us both.  Right now, I am on disc 4 of season 3 of the office.  It hurts to laugh.  I feel terrible for Tiffany as she has 3 kids to take care of now…  Definitely pray for her.

Growing up, I will never forget some of our family’s Christmas traditions.  Every year we would do certain things the same as the year before that.  For instance without fail I would get in trouble every christmas eve day.  I would be so wired up and ready for the big day that I would do something stupid and find myself causing stress in someone else’s life.  That was one of the unspoken Christmas traditions.  There were tons of other ones which we practiced every year faithfully.  One of them was setting up our families manger scene.  This is something that has become close to my heart.  I look back on those times with great memories.  As a family we would “open” up the manger scene and set each piece in it’s place.  I say open it up because each piece was carefully wrapped in tissue paper.  It was a grab bag of sorts.  You never knew which piece you were going to get.  However secretly inside, I always wanted to be the guy who unraveled the tissue and found a sweet little baby Jesus.  Anyway, once you unraveled your piece we would describe what part in the story the piece played.  This whole process got more and more theological as three of the four siblings went off to Bible College.  While I was in high school I can remembering coming up with different analogies and stories describing why the “ten thousand lambs” (It seemed like there were that many anyhow…) were at the manger scene, “The Lion and the Lamb”, “The sacrificial Lamb”, “Jesus was the good shepherd”, “All we like sheep have gone astray”, as I write this now, I am chuckling thinking about my sister Heather coming up with new and Biblical explanations of those little lambs.  Good times…  After the manger was all set up, my dad would open up his Bible, and the little ribbon would lay neatly open to Luke, and we would reread the gospel story once again.  What a genius’ my mom and dad were…  What a tradition.

The other day I realized that without even thinking we began doing something very similar with our kids.  The manger scene is quite different, and the way it was done was also different, but the idea remains the same.  I suppose you can say that the tradition will be carried on in my house.  Here are some pictures of the “Opening of the manger scene” 2008.

Here we are with my kids being 3 and almost 2 and I’m so excited to see what explanations they come up with when the donkey pops up, what do they do with that donkey.  I can’t wait to see where they theologically place the wisemen, or magi… or hmm… what were they?  I am looking forward to hearing if the angels sang or said, “Glory to God in the Highest”…  AH!  It’s going to be great… Did the magi/kings ride camels or horses…  (Thank you hallmark for all of your inaccurate images… but that’s another post…) We had a great time explaining the story of God, Jesus, coming to earth.

What traditions do you have?

Merry Christmas!!!
