“He’s so silly”, as my 2 year old Grace would say.  “That guy is so silly.”  Yesterday morning I was on my way to guys Bible Study and I decided to stop and pick up some donuts and chocolate milk.  Now let me give you a time stamp for when this was all happening at.  This was at the early hour of 5:55.  IN THE MORNING!  Seriously folks…  what is wrong with me?  Who plans a Bible study that early?  Anyway, as I am pulling out of Dunkin Donuts, I see this guy in spandex and a coat tricked out with reflective tape running towards me.  Now, at this hour in the morning my mind immediately thought, there must be a fire somewhere and he is running to get help.  I mean this guy wouldn’t possibly be running for exercise out in the mind numbing, bone chilling, pet debilitating cold.  (Yes, It was that cold!)  But sure enough, I realized that an outfit like that could only mean one thing.

HE’S CRAZY.

Sure enough I ended up being right.

Or at least so I thought.

In my mind…  “What is wrong with this guy?  Why in the world would he be running this early in the morning.  There must be something seriously wrong with this guy!  He’s crazy.”

But then I noticed something else as I loosened my seat belt…  And drove off with a dozen donuts in my car.  (Tubby)

He was tall and skinny.

Hmm… His discipline was mildly inspiring.  Mostly still crazy in my mind, but inspiring.

It wasn’t long after this that I began to think about how this is representative of my spiritual life.  I will so often say I want to be a spiritual giant like my Dad, or I want to know God’s word like the back of my hand.  Yet, I am not always willing to go “crazy” in order to attain that goal.  Shame on me!  “Stay round peter, don’t run… It’s too cold.”  That’s what my mind says.  My flesh says, “your good enough, don’t read today.   You can do it on your own, you don’t need God.”

BOGUS!  I am not good enough, I need to read more!  I can’t do it on my own.  I need God in everything I do.  It’s high time I don some spandex, and hit the pavement in the bitter cold at 5:55 AM.  Or at least spiritually speaking.  And, maybe I’ll trade the spandex for jeans…

Let’s go people.  What do you think?  Crazy?  You, me, that guy?  It’s time to become uncomfortable with the way we are, and move towards who God wants us to be!  Time to strive.  Time to long for more.  Time to step up to the plate and man up…

We’ve added a new feature here at the Salt Lick.  On Monday’s we will be interacting with Sunday nights message from The Five.  Last night at The Five we continued our series, “Foundations”, and looked specifically at giving, and what God’s plan for giving is.  I asked people to text me questions at any time during the sermon and said we would interact with those questions here on the blog.  It’s kind of an interesting experiment each week!  If you weren’t able to be at the Five this Sunday night, head over here, and listen in…  Well, here are the questions…

If you believe in the “tithe” does that belief discourage someone from giving more than 10%?

This is a great question.  I don’t believe that there is a definitive Biblical answer to this question.  However, in my mind, I would say that we should be careful in preaching and teaching a 10% tithing situation.  I have seen and know some very generous people who give way more than 10%.  Tithing unfortunately could become very legalistic with some people figuring out what they “owe” down to the penny.  Now, maybe this is diligence at it’s best.  Or maybe this is just filling out a check to rid yourself of that nagging guilty feeling.

Let me offer one quick illustration.  Whenever we do a fundraiser lunch, we make a suggested donation.  We don’t ever have a hard number of what it costs to eat.  We do this for two reasons.  One because we want anyone to come and enjoy the fellowship, even if they can’t pay for it.  And two because we know that there will be some people who will give way more than what we would think the normal donation would be if they weren’t told what to give.

SO, I would say, let’s be careful.  Don’t squash the Spirit.

What about the poor we see after we have given the tithe?

It is our responsibility to help the poor and the needy.  I can’t stress enough that God wants to use His Church to change the world!  We are those change agents.  If we close our eye to a brother or sister in need, then we should be shot!  Don’t tell me you want to build the kingdom of God, but you are unwilling to take care of that kingdom.

Giving is not about meeting a quota, or hitting some special number.  It is about accomplishing what God wants to do in and through you.  1 Corinthians 9:7 reminds us of this, “Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

When you run into that needy person after you have already put your check in the offering box at church, I see you having one of several options.  1, run to your on-line bank and cancel the check, 2 do nothing, 3 feel the stirring of God in your heart and watch as that compassion breaks something fierce in you and you do what the early church did in Acts 2; find the money in order to meet the need.  (all while trusting that God will provide for all of your needs, even as you provide for the needs of others!)

How do we know that what the Bible says about giving 10% in the OT still applies to us today?  Should we be giving more than that….i am just confused about where it talks about the 10% tithe?

We see a few references in the new testament to tithing, (Matthew 23:23, Luke 18:12).  I see these references as honestly being very Old Testament in nature.  I see Jesus saying, you do all of those things, but you neglect the important parts!  You neglect what is truly valuable.   In Matthew 23 Jesus is talking to the Pharisee’s and He is saying, you tithe down to your herb garden!  WOW! But you blow it so big in so many other areas.  The next location is Luke 18:12 and there we find Jesus talking about a Pharisee who was praying and boasting in himself and the great works that he does, with tithing being one of them.

This is a hard question to answer.  The best way for me to carefully walk down this road is to say that tithing is a good thing, as long as it is kept in check.  I believe that it is a good thing, however I see a potential for tithing to squash what the Holy Spirit may want you to do.  Meaning, God may have a great ministry opportunity for you to give to, however you can’t because “you have already given”.  See my above comments…  They may help.

When I read the New Testament I see time and time again where we are to give what is on our hearts.  If we have Jesus as the center of our life, and we are living to be more sanctified, and spirit led, God will be placing a burden on our hearts for the needs of those around us.  In addition I believe that when that is the case God will even supply us with the resources to be able to give.

Great questions!  I can’t wait for next Monday!

How do you deal with difficulties?

I was reading today about Joseph and the cards that he was dealt.  This guy suffered some serious hardships!  He was:

1. Thrown in a pit by his brothers

2. Sold by his brothers to merchants as a slave

3. Made a house servant

4. Accused of raping the Master’s wife

5. Thrown in prison

6. Forgotten in prison

That is some serious stuff.  I can’t say that any of that has happened to me.  I have been through several hard times over the course of my short life, however, nothing quite as brutal as that.  I mean that is some serious stuff.  As I was reading I was wondering how is Joseph going to respond?  I’ve read it before, but still, I wondered what is he going to do.  You can check it out here at Genesis 37-47.  Check this out.  He says, “Do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourself for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.”  Honestly, here’s Joseph’s response in english…  Hey don’t worry about it guys.  I mean, honestly don’t beat yourselves up over it.  It actually was really a good thing, because God used it to save lives!

That almost makes me laugh.  It is almost so ridiculous that I could laugh at his response.  But seriously, I shouldn’t be laughing.  It just seems so crazy.  Doesn’t it?  I mean am I the only one who finds it hard to believe that for years Joseph went through the incredible loss of family, friends, jobs, status, income, and peace of mind, and he woke up on the other end of it and said, “this was a good thing!”  It is incredible to me.  His response is amazng.

I know that we are in a crazy world right now.  I know plenty of guys loosing their jobs, or at least in fear of loosing their jobs.  When things get dicey what is your response?  I know what I wish my response would be more like… …

WOW!

What a privilage it is for me to serve as Pastor to such an exciting group of students!  I am so proud to be apart of God’s plan for this ministry!  It is incredible to watch as God unfolds incredible things… one after another after another.

Here’s the highlights…

Thursday’s nights “Vespers Service” was out of control!  I can’t tell you how many people came up to me and said, I NEEDED THAT!  I needed a longer period of time to just be with God and worship and pray!  The band led worship and it was humble yet entirely excellent too…  Praise God for the mix of humility yet the ability to use their God given talents to help lead us in worship.

We just wrapped up a month long teaching series called Reflect Christ!   We looked at how did Jesus react and treat people that he didn’t know, knew, and those whom we know best?  What does He have to say about compassion.  Better yet, what did He do about the needs of others!  INCREDIBLE.  I was challenged.  This was one of my favorite teaching series so far.

We unrolled a campaign to collect shoes for the organization Soles 4 Souls…  We presented it to our church on behalf of the student ministry, and the response and out pouring on the part of the people here was incredible.  THANK YOU FBC!  People showed up HUGE!

We sorted, bagged, and processed 2727 shoes to date tonight!  THAT IS 727 shoes above our goal!  HOW AWESOME IS THAT?

We are going to see God do some incredible things to come!  I believe it.  We have already seen some awesome stuff, but I believe as we have sung, “Greater things are yet to come, Greater things are still to be done in this city.”

I count it a privilage to serve as your pastor here at FBC!  I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!  PRAISE GOD…

“How faint the whisper we hear of Him!  Who then can understand the thunder of His power?”  – Job 26:14

WOW!  This one cut me to the quick.  We often will sit and wonder why God hasn’t done more… Why didn’t God protect me from this… Why didn’t He spare me?  All that kind of stuff?  Do you ever feel that way?  Why is my family the way it is, or why is my job so terrible?  These are the types of questions that plague the minds of so many of us.

This was  a great reminder to me.  The little bit that I know and understand of God, is just a faint whisper.  Imagine when the day comes when we see, and understand the power of God?  WHEW!  That is going to be amazing!

In light of this…

  1. Live with your eyes peeled for what God is doing in your life.  Look for everything that God is doing!  Rejoice and give God praise!
  2. Step out in faith that the God of all that is, was, and will be holds you firmly in His hand!

What has God done in 2008?  (in no particular order)

God Has…

  1. settled Tiffany and I here in Doylestown.
  2. broken my heart for the need’s of people.
  3. poured out blessing after blessing during times of serious financial need
  4. kept each one of us safe and healthy
  5. seen us through the creation of a Junior High and Senior High Youth Group.
  6. grew those groups spiritually
  7. grew those groups numerically
  8. worked in the lives of over a hundred teenagers here at FBC
  9. placed a burden on the hearts of people to give over $20,000 to the youth ministry
  10. cultivated rich friendships in my life
  11. grown my relationship with my wife to the degree that I didn’t know was possible
  12. stretched Tiffany and I in ways we couldn’t have imagined
  13. freed my dad from the limitations of sickness, disease, & brought him to the place of wholeness, and perfection
  14. allowed me some very special and intimate moments with my dad in the last few days
  15. gave me the strength to give testimony at my Dad’s funeral of not only who Dad was but who the very God that Dad served is
  16. given our youth ministry 21 solid youth leaders who not only love God with all their hearts, but also have a passion for students
  17. given me an anxious anticipation for the ministry that is to come in 2009!

What has God done in your life in 2008?  It has been pretty quiet around here lately, through the holiday’s I have been spending extra time with my family and loving it!  Let’s keep up the conversation in 2009!  Thanks to each one of you who come back and read everyday!  HAPPY NEW YEAR…

Well today is December 29th.  Can you believe that?  Today I spent the morning with my wife and kids on the beaches of LBI and driving around looking at all the old familiar spots.  We went to our second apartment, we went to the different places we loved.  Then we met a friend for lunch.  It was great.  It felt like old times.

After all this nostalgic reminiscing, it made me think…  “what has God done in the last year?”  So, I’m challenging myself to take a look at the last year, and analyize it.  I want to look back and see what God has done in my life over the last year.  I want to take some time to think about it, but then I will share some of it with you.

So I challenge you with this question…  “What has God done in your life this last year?”

Share with us!  Let’s give God some praise…

~Peter

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and Child.
Holy Infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love’s pure light;
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

Silent night, holy night
Wondrous star, lend thy light;
With the angels let us sing,
Alleluia to our King;
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!

Amen

I have heard many stories in the course of my short life.  I know this to be true.  In fact I have heard some really great stories.  I have the privilege of being a pastor and hearing a whole lot of stories.  However, I just finished reading a story about two unlikely friends.  “A modern day slave, an international art dealer, and the unlikely woman who bound them together.”  That’s what this story is all about, so the cover says.  However, this story is deeply penetrated with theme’s on God’s grace, God’s sovereignty, God’s love for the lost, God’s desire for all to know Him.  This story is running from cover to cover with countless moments that break your heart to read about the injustice that we as human beings dole out to our fellow man.  My heart was intricately and delicately intertwined in the story of Ron Hall and Denver Moore.

I was given this book by my mom for my birthday this past September.  After the home going of my dad, it was tough to read the last half of the book.   Yet this is an incredible book.  A story that makes me want to be more like Christ.  A tale that encourages me to reach out to the hurting, the ugly, the down and out, those who appear to have it all together yet actually don’t and anyone else God chooses to bring into my life.

One of the most amazing lines in this book is from Denver, I pray that this rings true of our lives…  mine included.  “Just tell em I’m a nobody that’s tryin to tell everybody ’bout Somebody that can save anybody.  That’s all you need to tell em.”

Seriously, if you are searching for that one last christmas gift… Here it is.  Search no more.  This in my humble opinion is a must read.

Check it out…

passion

There are certain songs that I can’t get out of my head. Some of them are good ones, and some of them are bad… You know, like this one is terrible… “I wish I were an Oscar Mayer Wiener…” But then there are some good ones. This week I can’t stop listening to and singing this song.
“God of this City” by Chris Tomlin. Here are the lyrics.

You’re the God of this City
You’re the King of these people
You’re the Lord of this nation
You are

You’re the Light in this darkness
You’re the Hope to the hopeless
You’re the Peace to the restless
You are

There is no one like our God
There is no one like our God

For greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City
Greater thing have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City

There is no one like our God
There is no one like our God

It resonates with me this week. What about you? What can you not stop listening to?
