The other night I was hanging out with a good buddy of mine, Rob.  Rob and I go way back… We go back to the days of middle school.  We were young morons that grew up together and lived life in the fast lane together.  The stories could go on forever.  So we got our families together for a fun evening of hanging out and catching up.  We ended up playing cards but then the card playing digressed into talking…  Which was awesome…  So I started building…  My hands are always doing something… Got to keep them busy… I started building a card house…  Didn’t get very far.  But then I thought about a little experiment…  Let’s see how many cards I can get on top of this card structure.  Here’s a few pictures…

card foundation...104 cards on top...Besides the obvious skill involved in getting all of those cards to balance there was a vital and necessary element to the whole production; the foundation.

Foundations are essential…  It doesn’t matter what you are doing…  Foundations are vital…

They are vital in:

  • card houses
  • real houses
  • friendships
  • marriages
  • jobs
  • school work
  • sports

It doesn’t just stop there.  Foundations are essential in your relationship with God and your understanding of Him!  With the simple card hut in mind, what kind of foundation are you establishing in the spiritual corners of your life?  Do you find yourself strengthening those foundations? Are you spending time reading God’s word? Are you finding times of quiet where you can pray and commune with God?  Are you finding times to be silent before the whole world and ask God to speak to you?  Are you finding times to spend with other christians so that you can encourage one another/build each other up/pray for one another and sharpen one another?  It’s these moments and efforts that help us strengthen our foundation.

Let’s try it.

Last night was exciting wasn’t it?  If you weren’t able to be there, jump over here, and listen to the teaching.  I am so excited for what God is doing at the Five.  I was really excited to hear from all of you during the teaching part of the evening.  You all had some great questions.  In addition, thanks to those of you who just wanted to say Hi, and those of you who said, “Peter, you look great in maroon.”  (Actually no one said that)  But anyway…  Let’s move onto the questions.

What is the background of the Penn Video?

This is a good question.  It was recorded December 8th, 2008.  It is a part of a series called, “Penn Says”.  This is a form of a video blog, and a way that Penn responds and disperses information with his fan base.  I saw this on someone else’s blog with a challenge to take quite seriously sharing the gospel with others.  I was really challenged by the perspective given on evangelism from Penn.  Interesting how God can use anything.  Here’s the video.

Have you ever doubted God?  Or just your devotion to Him?

Well, here’s where I’ll go first.  I’ll open it up, and you can answer this question too.  Have you?  I can’t remember a time where I doubted God’s existence.  I have always believed that God was here and active in my life.  However, I know that there have been times when I have questioned wether God could or would do anything about my life circumstances. I know for me, it was hard to watch my dad suffer, and to question why is God allowing this to happen to a man who has served God with his life.  I struggled with wondering if God was in control of this situation or not.  I’m not proud of this, I have spent time confessing to God that I had not been as faithful as I desired, or as faithful as He desires me to be.

I remember a time about 5 years ago when I had just gotten done surfing.  I was getting out of the water and I returned to my phone to find a voicemail.  It was from one of my sisters and they were delivering some news to me.  The news was negative in nature, and it had to do with the Church.  Not my church but a church.  I sat there and thought, “hmm… Is this really what I want to do with my life?  Do I want to put myself out there to be hurt by people?  To be accused, frustrated, tired, unappreciated?”  I thought about it.  Why is it that I do what I do?

I can honestly say it’s because God has given me so much.  He loves me so much.  I desire to make a difference in this world and help others come to know Jesus in a life changing way!  So, have I doubted God, I guess.  Have I doubted my devotion to Him?  I guess.  These are not high lights of my life.  But they are there.  God has been faithful to me in every situation, through every high and every low.  He never changes.  That is what is important to remember.

If your flock at home is divided, with you being the sole shepherd, should that be your main focus or do you take that effort and reach those outside in hopes that it is seen by the lost sheep at home?

Great question.  I think that God has called each one of us to be good stewards of all that He has given us.  (Including our salvation)  Due to the fact salvation is a free gift, achieved only through faith, not by works; we should be diligent in telling others about this free gift.  To say, ‘because there are lost sheep at home I don’t need to worry about those lost outside my home’ doesn’t make sense to me.  To say, ‘because there are lost sheep outside my home, I will focus on them’ also doesn’t make sense to me.  This is not an either or situation.  This is a both and situation.

You are right by saying that those inside your home may take notice of your efforts outside your home.  God is interested in everyone knowing Him.  Whatever you do, don’t be discouraged.  Keep up the hard work.  Check out John 13:34-35.

Thanks for your questions!  Let’s continue the conversation.  What do you think?

Last night we continued in our series “Foundations”.  We are looking at what God intended the church to be.  We have looked at several topics including money, worship, and last night we continued and looked at the topic of service.  Last week we introduced the idea of texting questions during the sermon with the idea of continuing the conversation…  So here we are.  Week two of continuing the conversation.

Check out the video below.

So as promised, here are some of the questions that we received at the five last night.

What is the mark you think you are leaving?  Is it the mark that you want to leave?

In order to answer this question you should look at the lives of the people around you…  How are you affecting/impacting them?  Are you building into others lives in a positive way?  I suppose that those are the questions you should ask yourself and then based upon your answers, go ahead and figure out if it is the mark that you were desiring to leave!

Every person will be leaving different marks than the other.  God has made each one of us unique and so we will naturally be affecting the lives of people in uniquely different ways.  Do not feel like you need to compare yourself to someone else.

Do you think the Lord already knows what mark we will leave and if so are we capable of changing that?

I love this question!  Thanks for asking it.  Yes, I believe that God knows what mark we will leave.  I believe that God is sovereign and omniscient.  SO, yes, I believe that God knows everything about our life and the decisions that we will make.

I believe that God knows the potential that each one of us has.  What we do with our potential is up to us.  God has given us free will and that means that we can choose what we are going to do, or what we will not do.  So, yes, we have the ability to change the marks that we are making.  If you are unhappy with the ones you are making right now, step it up…  You can change.  God has given you some incredible potential.

I’m really excited by these questions!  Keep them coming!

We’ve added a new feature here at the Salt Lick.  On Monday’s we will be interacting with Sunday nights message from The Five.  Last night at The Five we continued our series, “Foundations”, and looked specifically at giving, and what God’s plan for giving is.  I asked people to text me questions at any time during the sermon and said we would interact with those questions here on the blog.  It’s kind of an interesting experiment each week!  If you weren’t able to be at the Five this Sunday night, head over here, and listen in…  Well, here are the questions…

If you believe in the “tithe” does that belief discourage someone from giving more than 10%?

This is a great question.  I don’t believe that there is a definitive Biblical answer to this question.  However, in my mind, I would say that we should be careful in preaching and teaching a 10% tithing situation.  I have seen and know some very generous people who give way more than 10%.  Tithing unfortunately could become very legalistic with some people figuring out what they “owe” down to the penny.  Now, maybe this is diligence at it’s best.  Or maybe this is just filling out a check to rid yourself of that nagging guilty feeling.

Let me offer one quick illustration.  Whenever we do a fundraiser lunch, we make a suggested donation.  We don’t ever have a hard number of what it costs to eat.  We do this for two reasons.  One because we want anyone to come and enjoy the fellowship, even if they can’t pay for it.  And two because we know that there will be some people who will give way more than what we would think the normal donation would be if they weren’t told what to give.

SO, I would say, let’s be careful.  Don’t squash the Spirit.

What about the poor we see after we have given the tithe?

It is our responsibility to help the poor and the needy.  I can’t stress enough that God wants to use His Church to change the world!  We are those change agents.  If we close our eye to a brother or sister in need, then we should be shot!  Don’t tell me you want to build the kingdom of God, but you are unwilling to take care of that kingdom.

Giving is not about meeting a quota, or hitting some special number.  It is about accomplishing what God wants to do in and through you.  1 Corinthians 9:7 reminds us of this, “Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

When you run into that needy person after you have already put your check in the offering box at church, I see you having one of several options.  1, run to your on-line bank and cancel the check, 2 do nothing, 3 feel the stirring of God in your heart and watch as that compassion breaks something fierce in you and you do what the early church did in Acts 2; find the money in order to meet the need.  (all while trusting that God will provide for all of your needs, even as you provide for the needs of others!)

How do we know that what the Bible says about giving 10% in the OT still applies to us today?  Should we be giving more than that….i am just confused about where it talks about the 10% tithe?

We see a few references in the new testament to tithing, (Matthew 23:23, Luke 18:12).  I see these references as honestly being very Old Testament in nature.  I see Jesus saying, you do all of those things, but you neglect the important parts!  You neglect what is truly valuable.   In Matthew 23 Jesus is talking to the Pharisee’s and He is saying, you tithe down to your herb garden!  WOW! But you blow it so big in so many other areas.  The next location is Luke 18:12 and there we find Jesus talking about a Pharisee who was praying and boasting in himself and the great works that he does, with tithing being one of them.

This is a hard question to answer.  The best way for me to carefully walk down this road is to say that tithing is a good thing, as long as it is kept in check.  I believe that it is a good thing, however I see a potential for tithing to squash what the Holy Spirit may want you to do.  Meaning, God may have a great ministry opportunity for you to give to, however you can’t because “you have already given”.  See my above comments…  They may help.

When I read the New Testament I see time and time again where we are to give what is on our hearts.  If we have Jesus as the center of our life, and we are living to be more sanctified, and spirit led, God will be placing a burden on our hearts for the needs of those around us.  In addition I believe that when that is the case God will even supply us with the resources to be able to give.

Great questions!  I can’t wait for next Monday!
