Last night Tiffany and I took our kids over to Central Park here in Doylestown.  It is one of our favorite places to walk while our kids ride their bikes.  Not to mention that Noah and Grace love to run through this massive castle maze!  Noah has recently learned how to ride a bike without training wheels and he is just ecstatic!  Grace is still cruising along with her training wheels for now.  The weather was beautifully cool and the sky was gorgeous.  It was no secret, it was a great night for walking!  There were a lot of people walking dogs, walking alone with their pure white apple earbuds jammed in their ears.  There were young families, like ours, getting their kids out for a pre back-to-school hurrah.  It was a great night for walking!

As great as it was for walking it must have been equally as great a night for segway riding, and the atmospheric pressure must have been premier for boomerang throwing.  (add a hint of sarcasm there)  Why you ask?  Well, because I saw both of those activities happening.

Oh, no big deal you say?  When was the last time you saw someone throwing a boomerang I ask you?

Just wait… It gets better.

The guy riding the segway was the same guy throwing the boomerang.  I was impressed, that boomerang flew back to him each time.  There he was out in the field doing his rythmic dance of throwing, leaning and catching.

Only in Doylestown right?    Pretty cool if you ask me.  I was slightly jealous of both his boomerang skills and his segway skills.  Tiffany and I watched him for a while as we were walking back to our car.  So, Mr. Segway-boomerang man if you somehow stumble on this please contact me and teach me your ways.  Because that would be cool!

Yesterday I started a reading plan with YouVersion, the online Bible reader. I started “Reading God’s story:One year chronological plan”.  So yesterday I read Genesis 1 &2.  Today I read John 1:1-3, Psalm 8, and Psalm 104.  I came across this verse in Psalm 104 (Great Psalm by the way… Go read it!)

24 O Lord, how many are Your works!
In wisdom You have made them all;
The earth is full of Your possessions.

I wondered, was the segway made in God’s wisdom?  What about the boomerang?  And the sport of combining the two activities? The earth is full of His possessions.  While shaving this morning I was looking at the drain thinking, what about modern plumbing?  Did God give all of this to us in His infinite wisdom?

I’m not sure, but I do know that God gave us minds to think and create.  I think God delights in the fact that His creation, who is made in His image, follows His patterns of creativity.  The human mind longs to create, invent, and dream.  So Mr. Segway-boomerang man, I think you not only brought a smile to my face, but to the heart of God.

Keep dreaming.  Keep thinking.  Keep creating.  Who knows what you will come up with.

What is the best creation or invention that you have seen someone come up with lately?  If it’s a website, youtube clip, or picture let’s see them!

Over the last four months, there has been a wrestling match going on in my mind: To blog or not to blog.  I asked myself questions like, “Do I have enough thoughts in my head to share with people?” or “does anyone even care what I think about ______?”  The question that I really had to figure out was, “Do I have anything to add to the conversation?”

I have stopped blogging all together largely due to four reasons.

Time Pressure. There is only so much time in one day.  We are all responsible for the same 86,400 seconds that are given to us each and everyday.  Those seconds will fly by if you are not careful!

Started Seminary. Life took an interesting twist for my family and I this fall.  I have started taking classes at Biblical Theological Seminary in Hatfield PA.  I am pursuing my Master’s of Divinity.  I will be the first to admit that the last four months have been stressful ones.  It has been a time for me to readjust my life, time and priorities.  It has been incredible, yet it has been a time of adjustments too.

Feeling Uncreative.  No one wants to read a boring blog.  I don’t, and I’m sure you don’t either.  I was feeling boring.  The creative elements were lacking!  I did not want to bore you.

Adding to the Noise. Even more than just being uncreative, I did not want to add to the noise in the lives of people.  If by un-creatively blogging all I was doing was adding 500 words of jargon and nonsense then I’d rather not do it.  There is plenty of noise, plenty of blogs, and books out there that can distract you from your relationship with God/your family/productivity.  I don’t need to be one more distraction.

As I started to say, over the last four months I have been wrestling with the idea of what do I have to add right now?  Is it time to pick up and start writing again? I have three reasons why I have decided to get back into the discipline of blogging.

A Desire to be Creative. I love being creative.  I enjoy creativity of all kinds.  However, one of the ways I most enjoy being creative is in the expression and transference of truth.  I enjoy expressing truth in non-traditional ways.  Blogging often times give me the opportunity to be creative in expressing God’s truth.  I share with people frequently, view life through the lens of a parable.  When you see life through the lens of a parable all of a sudden truth pops out creatively!  I want to be a creator not just a consumer.

A Desire to share what I’m learning. Every week I read tons of pages of information, and I sit through a minimum of 5 hours of class.  I write papers, turn them in and about three people read them.  Each and every month I pay a huge price tag to do all of this.  Believe me I know that my education is a privilege!  However, it doesn’t sit right with me to not share what I am learning.  It would be an incredible waste of resources if I did not share what I am learning and thinking about.

A Desire to Start Conversations (around the other two points). One of the things that I have enjoyed most in my classes are the conversations that inevitably crop up with other classmates.  I love hearing their perspective, life experiences, and thoughts on whatever issue or topic we are discussing.  I see this blog as a platform to allow conversations like that to happen.  It is not just about the 500 words.  It’s the words after the 500.

With these things in mind I invite you to join me in a conversation here.  Let’s see where we go!

When I came home from Youth Group last night Tiffany said, I have something you need to see.  I was met with both fear and excitement.  What is it that she could possibly have for me… Bills?  Or something amazing…  Who knew?  Well, all of a sudden, she pops up this little ditty right below, and I thought it would be unfair of me not to share the love on this fine Labor Day.  So grab someone you know and love and enjoy this one… Pretty funny if you ask me…

What has been the most creative thing you have ever experienced at a wedding?

I think for me it was the time they blew bubbles instead of throwing rice at the bride and groom!  (Add a generous helping of sarcasm to that last one)

Or there was the time that my wife was invited to the wedding/reception and I wasn’t!  (Nope, no sarcasm there, just all truth…)  That’s creativity! I think… … …

Anyway… Here’s to all you happy engaged couples…  Enjoy your wedding, it really is the start to one of the best times of your life!
