Yet again, I forgot entirely to mention the text your questions bit… So, we didn’t receive any questions.  So, nothing to answer today… However, I choose to blame the fact that there were no questions on the rediculously beautiful weather that we had yesterday…  (until about 6:30)  Seriously, I don’t blame all of you who skipped church.  Those of you who set aside your time being with God in order to enjoy the great outdoors!  I’m just messing around.  Anyhow, if you weren’t at the Five last night, we missed you.

We are messing around with a new website even as we speak.  You can link to it from here.  Last night’s sermon is up there, and also the week before too.  So, get excited… We will load up more and more information as hours in the day become available to do so!

I’m so excited to be able to pastor such an exciting service!  I can’t wait to see what God does!

Right now I am in the midst of a project.  I have a dresser laid out in the basement receiving its first coat of primer.  It was stained a honey”ish” color, and we are going to be using it for my daughter Grace.  So, here’s the deal.  We didn’t like the color, and we didn’t like the handles.  We liked the dresser overall though…  It has great potential.  It is in decent shape.  It needs a little love from the gorilla.  That is the gorilla glue… But, it will be a solid piece of beautiful furniture once we are done with it.

Yesterday I sanded it down, roughed up the finish a bit so that it will be ready to accept the primer that I applied today.

It is a work in progress.

It is not perfect yet.

It is just like me.

I am a work in progress.  I am not perfect yet.

Every single one of us has incredible potential.  We have the ability to be incredible or just honey colored stained wood.  God has given each one of us and incredible gift- LIFE.  What are you doing right now, today, to increase the beauty that God has instilled in you.  What are you doing to refinish your life so that it radiates God’s glory?  What are you doing today to take care of the gift that God values at a cost non of us could ever pay?

I’m working on refinishing my life…

Last night we started a new teaching series at the five, Plan B.  Honestly I sit here and I am overwhelmed and excited by it all at the same time.  I feel like it is so huge of a thought to wrap our minds around that it is going to be hard for me to do it justice, yet I am thrilled to be able to help spur on thought, and discussion, which hopefully will lead to healing and restoration.  Here’s the video that we used to open up our teaching time.

I remembered to push the conversation through text button last night, and we did get a few questions…  So, let’s carry the conversation over…

1.  Why did God choose to send Elijah to Zarephath?

God moved Elijah away from the brook for one very simple reason.  The brook wasn’t there anymore.  It had dried up, and it was non existent.  So, God moved him to Zarephath.  I can’t find any direct line of reasoning for why God chose Zarephath out of all the towns in the world to send Elijah to.  What’s ironic is that God sent Elijah to a Phoenician town while He was fleeing from the promoter of a Phoenician pagan theological system.

2.  What is the difference between a Baptist and a NonDenominational Church?  Don’t we all worship the same God?

The difference’s between a Baptist Church and a NonDenominational Church are often very small.  It generally tends to come down to how do you do certain things.  As in, what is the method, or tradition, that you use in order to serve communion.  There are any number of examples that I could give.  However, to answer your question plainly, there is not much of a difference between a Baptist Church and a Bible believing NonDenominational church.  In the case of a Bible believing NonDenominational church, yes, we do worship the same God.

The other youth group I go to is kinda dried out, what can I or the group do to try and “moisten” our hearts?

This is a great question.  You could very seriously replace the word youth group with the word church and apply this to any situation inside of the body of Christ.  From time to time, we will go through seasons of “dryness”; meaning, we won’t be in as close communion with God.  We will go through this personally as well as corporately.  Why is it that some church’s are booming today, but 3 years from now there is a few faithful attenders, but the boom has gotten up and busted?  I’m sure that there is no easy answer to this.  However, the number one thing that you can do is pray and ask God to show you ways that you can help draw the group/church back into that experience and that fellowship.  A great book to read for this is “It” by Craig Groeschel.  Here’s a link to a video done by Craig, talking about the book.

Some of the things that you can be doing is by cultivating an environment where people are known and cared for.  This is something that we try and do at the Five.  I think another thing you can do is to make sure that what is being discussed and what is being taught are things that are relevant and important to today.  Meaning, what am I going to do with what I just heard… If I can’t do something with it today, or tonight when I get home, than….  I’m not sure it really matters.  Unfortunately that is the attitude that we too often face.

The best thing you can do is to pray for your group, your church, and your pastor!

Thanks for the questions… Keep em coming!

So, have you arrived at the newest form of social media?  Do you twit, tweet, or twitter?  Whatever you want to call it… Well, I’ve sat on the side lines for a while, watching this little blue bird hatch.  I’ve decided to jump in.  So, go ahead, follow the tweets of this guy right here.  It’s like getting little streaming bits of the salt lick all day long!  Who could ask for more?

Wether you follow or not, do you twitter?

Let’s carry the conversation… I’m excited to see us as the Church move beyond the hour we meet together, I love to see us interact with each other, and carry the conversation beyond the four walls of the church building.  We try and do that here on the blog.  During the service we invite you to text questions/comments/thoughts my way, and then we get together as a community afterwards and mull them over.  If you weren’t able to be at the 5 tonight, you can jump over here and check out the teaching.

So, tonight, I forgot to warn everyone to get their cell phones out and be ready to text questions and thoughts… So, we didn’t get any questions this week.  Due to that fact, you will have the distinct privilege of hearing my highlights for the night.

Here they are…  (In no particular order)

1.  Hearing a guy about my age say he came tonight because two middle age men gave him a balloon at First Friday @ downtown Doylestown.  Seriously that was one of the funniest things I’ve heard in a long time.  Good work Ken and Dean.

2.  Meeting Chad, a guy who works out at the Y.  He goes, hey don’t you go to the Y?  Very cool… Glad you were there Chad!

3.  Wrapping up our teaching series, “Foundations”, on what it means to be the Church.

4.  Being able to enjoy the community that God has designed for each of us, and enjoying it at 5:00 on Sunday evenings!

5.  Watching our night lights kids program grow!  We had over 15 kids there last night! I’m loving that.

6.  Hearing stories of how people invited their friends and family to come to the Five.

7.  Anticipating what God is going to do next!

I’m really excited to see what God is going to do with the Five!  Keep us in prayer!

For our Junior and Senior High youth groups we are doing a dodgeball tournament in a couple weekends.  I love the dodgeball tournament.  It is fierce, exciting, and all around healthy fun.  So, i gave our intern, and our secretary, the task of coming up with a sweet poster for it.  Here’s the graphic they came up with.  This one needs a caption!  I love it.

Let’s hear em…

Okay, so I love the Church.  I’ve made that pretty clear in the last month and a half.  Some times the church just can be unbelievable though.  Something happened today that I just couldn’t fully wrap my arms around.  It was so funny.  It was the kind of thing that as a speaker you pray never happens to you, but as a listener, you are secretly praying that they will say something like this…

The Pastoral staff team from our church today went to a local church to participate in a conference.  Mid way through the morning we were given a break from the speakers.  Now, the M.C. of the event got up and was explaining that we were not to walk through the hallways and such.  This is where things began to get beautiful.  His explanation of why we weren’t to walk through the hallways was because they have a “Large Ladies ministry and there is no room for us down in that section of the building.”

Honestly!  You couldn’t dream this stuff up even if you tried.

So, if your church is looking for a new ministry…  You might want to consider the Large Ladies ministry… Pray about it.

Last night was exciting wasn’t it?  If you weren’t able to be there, jump over here, and listen to the teaching.  I am so excited for what God is doing at the Five.  I was really excited to hear from all of you during the teaching part of the evening.  You all had some great questions.  In addition, thanks to those of you who just wanted to say Hi, and those of you who said, “Peter, you look great in maroon.”  (Actually no one said that)  But anyway…  Let’s move onto the questions.

What is the background of the Penn Video?

This is a good question.  It was recorded December 8th, 2008.  It is a part of a series called, “Penn Says”.  This is a form of a video blog, and a way that Penn responds and disperses information with his fan base.  I saw this on someone else’s blog with a challenge to take quite seriously sharing the gospel with others.  I was really challenged by the perspective given on evangelism from Penn.  Interesting how God can use anything.  Here’s the video.

Have you ever doubted God?  Or just your devotion to Him?

Well, here’s where I’ll go first.  I’ll open it up, and you can answer this question too.  Have you?  I can’t remember a time where I doubted God’s existence.  I have always believed that God was here and active in my life.  However, I know that there have been times when I have questioned wether God could or would do anything about my life circumstances. I know for me, it was hard to watch my dad suffer, and to question why is God allowing this to happen to a man who has served God with his life.  I struggled with wondering if God was in control of this situation or not.  I’m not proud of this, I have spent time confessing to God that I had not been as faithful as I desired, or as faithful as He desires me to be.

I remember a time about 5 years ago when I had just gotten done surfing.  I was getting out of the water and I returned to my phone to find a voicemail.  It was from one of my sisters and they were delivering some news to me.  The news was negative in nature, and it had to do with the Church.  Not my church but a church.  I sat there and thought, “hmm… Is this really what I want to do with my life?  Do I want to put myself out there to be hurt by people?  To be accused, frustrated, tired, unappreciated?”  I thought about it.  Why is it that I do what I do?

I can honestly say it’s because God has given me so much.  He loves me so much.  I desire to make a difference in this world and help others come to know Jesus in a life changing way!  So, have I doubted God, I guess.  Have I doubted my devotion to Him?  I guess.  These are not high lights of my life.  But they are there.  God has been faithful to me in every situation, through every high and every low.  He never changes.  That is what is important to remember.

If your flock at home is divided, with you being the sole shepherd, should that be your main focus or do you take that effort and reach those outside in hopes that it is seen by the lost sheep at home?

Great question.  I think that God has called each one of us to be good stewards of all that He has given us.  (Including our salvation)  Due to the fact salvation is a free gift, achieved only through faith, not by works; we should be diligent in telling others about this free gift.  To say, ‘because there are lost sheep at home I don’t need to worry about those lost outside my home’ doesn’t make sense to me.  To say, ‘because there are lost sheep outside my home, I will focus on them’ also doesn’t make sense to me.  This is not an either or situation.  This is a both and situation.

You are right by saying that those inside your home may take notice of your efforts outside your home.  God is interested in everyone knowing Him.  Whatever you do, don’t be discouraged.  Keep up the hard work.  Check out John 13:34-35.

Thanks for your questions!  Let’s continue the conversation.  What do you think?

~Peter
