Recently at my church, we celebrated our 1,007th baptism since our initial launch! That’s right. That’s One Thousand and Seven people who stepped into a portable hot tub to publicly declare that Jesus is their Lord and Savior. It’s been a privilege of mine to baptize 58 of those 1007. Every number has a name, and every name is attached to a story, and every story matters to God! At Liquid we believe that a baptism service is a reason to celebrate, and a celebration is a call to be loud. So we pull out all the stops, and go crazy for each one of those people who go under the water, and come out again! We are celebrating life change, and the story that God is writing in their lives.
Standing in the hot tub with each of these people has allowed me a front row seat into the life of so many of our church members. I realize however that there have been hundreds of people who have impacted the lives of these 1007 people. This next step in their journey of faith has been achieved not because of anyone person, but because of a multitude of volunteers, friends, and family. To the worship leaders who have created environments for these people to express their hearts emotions, the liquid kids volunteers who serve their children faithfully, to the media team ensuring that the message goes out clearly, thank you. Thank you for the part that you are playing in the lives of each of these individuals. Friends and family, thank you for all that you have done to lovingly guide them and direct them towards Christ. All of your prayers and conversations have made a huge difference!
Don’t give up. Don’t stop now.
The writer of Hebrews tells the story of some amazing people’s journey of faith in Hebrews chapter 11. (read it, you’ll be glad you did.) It is just like what happens at one of our baptism services. We hear the stories of people’s journey’s of faith- their testimony’s. But in chapter 12 the writer tells us because of the stories that we’ve heard… Because of the testimony’s that have been shared… because of the baptism stories you’ve experienced…
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2
Don’t give up. Don’t stop now. There are still more people who don’t know Jesus.
Push on. Keep serving. Keep praying. Keep loving your friends, neighbors, coworkers, aunts, uncles, nephews, gas station attendants, and everyone else you come in contact with. I know that for every one person that has been baptized in that tub, it cost each of you countless hours of service, and energy. But it was worth it.
Heaven will be a bit more crowded because of your efforts and your energy. And I’m pumped for that. So here’s to reaching 5,000. Let’s do it together.
